The Healing Benefits of Vitamins and Minerals
Health supplements have had a really good rap just recently, but regardless of some of the claims made, they are not the secret elixir of life. However, it is really tempting to view them as just that. Anything that can help turn back time, look better, stave off cancer and heart disease, boost your immune system, battle against viruses and colds, help you work with anxiety attack and boost your energy levels definitely sounds enticingly miraculous or magical.
A few decades ago, when people first began talking about the therapeutic potential of nutritional supplements, people concerned about their health went wild for bottled nutrients and were desperate to be told if they could possibly be used as part of a liver detox regime. As it turned out, so did health authors and even some medical doctors. For a while, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you could protect yourself against illness just by taking loads of vitamins. Swallow enough vitamin pills to make you rattle, and presto! Perfect health was just round the corner.
As luck would have, things weren’t quite that simple. As we very quickly realized, vitamin pills, regardless of how powerful they may be, simply aren’t a cure-all. But they can do a lot. A lot of clinical studies just recently are generating interest in this vital subject once again. Many newly discovered features about the healing power of these vital nutrients will amaze you.
Let’s take a brief look at just one study that didn’t get all that much publicity. Researchers in London looked at 180 middle managers employed in the manufacturing industry in Britain. As part of the research, half of the participants took a complete health supplement and another group a look-alike pill that did not contain nutrients. After 8 weeks, those receiving supplements revealed in tests that they perceived an improvement in their quality of life.
The placebo group reported no significant changes to their wellbeing. Researchers concluded that the supplements did indeed play a role in improving the managers’ moods and reducing their stress levels. All of this from just a daily multivitamin pill… with all those clinical trials to confirm their conclusions.
As more and more rigorous scientific studies accumulate accumulating a wealth of information about the protective properties of these health supplements, especially when they are included as part of a healthy detox diet, we’re all back where we were a few decades ago: eager to take advantage of all of this healing potential – yet at the same time completely confused due to information overload. While the reasons for taking vitamins and minerals are now supported by scientific research, finding health supplements that actually work can be very confusing.
