Group B Streptococcus And Medical Negligence
One common type of claim pursued by a medical negligence lawyer is the birth injury lawsuit. There are four main categories. To start with, there are those that involve a physical injury to the newborn. Second, there are those that involve birth defects. An example of this type of case is that in which the child is born with a genetic abnormality. Following this there are those cases that involve a stillbirth. Finally, there are the cases that involve the death of the child within a short time after being born.
Let’s explore one of the cases that involve injuries. Many times the injuries are severe and can include loss of vision, deafness, cognitive and physical limitations, and seizure disorders. Even when the child survive the injuries can leave the child with life long disabilities. Take, for example, injuries from an infection. One kind of of infection that poses a serious risk to newborns is from a group b streptococcus bacterial infection.
The immune system of a new born baby is not yet fully developed. Group b strep can quickly lead to sepsis , a condition in which the infection spreads throughout the baby’s body resulting in serious organ damage and even organ failure. The infection can also quickly lead to pneumonia. The infection can also result in meningitis which can leave the child with various permanent problems including cerebral palsy and seizure disorders. If a doctor does not screen the mother for group b strep at the appropriate point in the pregnancy, does not administer antibiotics during labor if the mother is group b strep positive or presents with risk factors, or does not monitor the newborn and administer antibiotics as necessary if they were not administered even though they were called for during labor or the newborn has signs of infection that doctor may be liable.
