Is Assisted Living right for you?

Hot News | Monday April 27 2009 9:04 am | Comments Off

Assisted living is for adults who need help with everyday tasks. It is not an alternative to a nursing home, but an intermediate level of long-term care appropriate for many seniors. Assisted living exists to bridge the gap between independent living and nursing homes.

How do you know if your loved one needs an assisted living facility (ALF)? ALFs are for people needing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) but wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. ALFs offer help with ADLs such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with medications. Statistically, an assisted living resident needs assistance with an average of three ADLs. ALFs are popular because they are less restrictive and less expensive than a nursing home, which is the last place many older adults want to go. They provide the residents with more freedom.

What should you know about ALFs in general? It is important to know what type of environment each assisted living facility caters to so that your loved one will be comfortable and happy. Find out if the assisted living facility offers any exercise programs, shopping trips, and/or other entertainment. Assisted living residences range in size from 3 to over 200 beds. There is no nationally recognized definition of assisted living in the US. Assisted Living facilities are regulated and licensed at the state level. Some assisted living facilities are part of retirement communities. The Consumer Consortium on Assisted Living (CCAL) is a national nonprofit consumer-based organization nationwide focused on the needs, rights and protection of assisted living consumers, their caregivers and loved ones. For more information about choosing the right Assisted Living Facility, just follow our link.

Assisted living costs less than nursing home care. Most Assisted Living residences charge month-to-month rates, but a few residences require long-term contracts. Medicare does not cover the costs of assisted living. So be sure you understand the costs beforehand.

Personalized Gift Baskets

Hot News | Monday April 27 2009 8:21 am | Comments Off

One of the most versatile gifts you can make is a gift basket. If you individualize it, it can be an incredible and unforgettable gift. Abandon the stereotype of what a gift basket represents.

A lot of you might think a gift basket is not appropriate for your 9 year old nephew, or perhaps your sports-obsessed uncle. But when you create the gift basket you can make it anything you desire. Just for example the basket portion does not need to be a traditional wicker basket. The basket might be a football helment turned upside down to handle the other gifts, such as tickets to a game or a rolled up jersey or a t-shirt and some favorite snacks. Or the basket can be a toy truck stuffed with other little fun toys.

Don’t insulate your gift-giving to only providing gift baskets to certain people, whether you select gift basket for women or basket presents for your old grandma.

One of the reasons it is fun to receive a gift basket is because of the variety of items in it. The gifts in the basket are frequently set on a unique motif that suits the person receiving the present and sometimes it is planned for the occasion too. Are candy gift baskets most proper for the occasion or does the individual truly appreciate cheese and crackers?

Yet when you’re producing a basket you may do whatsoever you want. If you understand the individual really well you may present a range of particulars that have no connection or motif, but that features a meaning to the two of you.

Scores of people, old or young, male or female, enjoy a sweet tooth, so do not neglect to regard chocolate gift baskets. But do not force such sweets on everyone, either.

For the gardener in your life you can present a pleasant watering can as the basket and occupy it with flower, vegetable or herb seeds you’re confident he or she will like. You can also add some horticulture mitts, small horticulture tools and perhaps even a starter flower or plant. Individualize the present by including unique items you’re confident she or he will love.

Just set a little effort into the gift basket and the person who will be receiving it. Be certain you understand any dietary limitations including food allergic reactions or any particular tastes.

Can You Really Make Money Writing Articles

Hot News | Monday April 27 2009 8:12 am | Comments Off

No matter where you go online, you’ll find content. More specifically, you will find articles.

So where do these articles come from? Sure, some of them are written by the webmasters who publish them on their websites, but where do the rest come from?

Well there is a band of people who spend their time writing articles to order for people who either don’t have the time or don’t have the skill to do it themselves. They are content writers for hire, and many of them have more than enough work to earn a decent full time living from it.

So in answer to the question in the title, yes you can earn money doing this. You just have to know how to go about it.

So where do you start? There are lots of places you can find work online – freelance job boards, freelance bidding sites and classified ad sites like Craigslist. There are even some blogs run by freelance writers which share any good prospects they have found for finding jobs.

It’s clear that you cannot sit back and wait for people to come and find you for work. You need to have a plan – you need to consciously make the effort to go out and find article writing jobs that pay. You must also accept that you won’t succeed in getting every job you apply for. It pays therefore to apply for more than you actually want, in order to get the income you’d like to earn.

You will see some article writing gigs advertised very cheaply, paying only a dollar or so for each article. Don’t go for these – even if you are a beginner you should not accept such low prices. Work on making your writing as good as you possibly can and people will gladly pay you decent fees to buy your work.

To begin with you might want to concentrate on one or two specialties that you have plenty of knowledge about. Once you get your feet under the table you can extend your range. It’s obvious to say that the more subjects you can write about, the more money you can earn, since there will be more jobs that will appeal to you.

One other good tip for making sure people know about your skills for hire as an article writer is to create your own blog and/or website – preferably both. Not only will people find you through the search engines, but you can also demonstrate your writing skills by adding posts and articles to your own blog and website as time goes on.

Some people will tell you that you cannot make any real money by writing articles for online publication. But it IS possible – and you can earn a good income at it too, if you put the effort into it.

You can also join with various revenue sharing website and submit articles to these sites in exchange for a share of the ad revenue they generate.

But you won’t earn the money if you are unwilling to keep on trying, or you give up after a couple of gos. It’s up to you just how successful you want to be.

Apartment for rent in Bangkok – Consider these 3 things

Hot News | Saturday April 25 2009 8:25 am | Comments Off

Bangkok is a world city and and on of the easiest cities to live in. Look at the wealth of shopping, restaurants, nightlife and culture and one will see that Bangkok is a great place to live with focus on life and fun If you ask 100 people to describe Bangkok, you will probably get 99 different attempts. Some will surely dwell on Bangkok’s traffic and smog and what can be off-putting aromas. Others will revel in the hedonism available in Bangkok’s many entertainment venues.

Anyone who has visited the city can tell you that finding a condo for rent in Bangkok was a pretty easy task

When considering a Bangkok apartment rental these are 3 main factors you should consider

1. What is the rent? While this might be the primary concern for most people, the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is about 25.000 Baht. However the closer to the centre of the city you stay, the more expensive it will of course be with rents up towards 40.000 Baht for a 1 bed

2. Commuting? One of Bangkoks negative sides is the traffic. Make sure you take into consideration the travel time required to get to work or school when looking for your home. A trip that takes 30 minutes in non-rush hour traffic can take several hours at peak traffic hours and it will be frustrating in the long run

3. What´s your lifestyle? – Are you single and like to go out in the evening for a bite to eat and meet up with friends at the pub? You might want to consider staying in a more crowded area with more choices in regards to entertainment and nightlife. However in doing so you might have to revise your rental budget upwards

House for rent in Bangkok, can be a daunting but fun task.

Finding a home, which allows you to meet all these three considerations, can be one of the toughest tasks for anyone in Bangkok, however, most of the times people come out smiling after the deal!

Designing A Web Site For A Specific Screen Resolution is Outdated

Hot News | Saturday April 25 2009 8:08 am | Comments Off

Introduction

One way of answering the question about what size screen resolution to ask your website development team to build your new website at, is to look at your existing webstats and see what screen sizes you existing site visitors are using.

I was reading somewhere recently that apparently these days the only answer to that question should be ‘all of them’ and ‘none of them’. What this basically means is that new websites should be built to accommodate all different screen sizes these days, particularly with the increased popularity of hand help web browsers, smart phones, net books and the like. Of course there is also the other end of the spectrum in the new huge wide screen flat screen monitors. I recently treated myself to a 24 inch Asus which does 1920×1080 which is big enough to get two web browser windows on screen side by side, but if you make one of them full size, the majority or websites look, well, just plain strange!

What exactly is screen resolution then?

If you are not familiar with screen resolution, the simple answer is that it is the size of your screen. However, this can be quite misleading because it is actually the number of pixels that make up the display area on the screen of your monitor. Still not clear? Well let’s look at some examples to help clarify exactly what screen resolution is.

Currently what would appear to be the most popular screen resolution is 1024×768 (accounting for 62% of my website visitors). This is a screen that is 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. What is a pixel? A Pixel, derived from the phrase Picture Element, is basically one of the thousands of tiny dots that make up your display screen. However, this does not necessarily determine the physical size of your monitor (14 inch, 15 inch, 19 inch etc) because most monitors are capable of displaying the screen in different screen resolutions. It is fairly accurate to say that if you want to run your monitor at a high screen resolution then you will need a large monitor, the larger the monitor the greater the resolution it can display at (assuming your graphics processor can support a high resolution).

All getting a bit technical? Put simply the larger the screen resolution the more things you can fit on your screen before they have to go onto the next line, or before you have to scroll down or scroll right.

What’s this got to do with Website Design?

When creating the visuals for a new website design, traditionally the experienced graphic designer would be working to a specific resolution in order to make sure that the design fits in your browser window without having to scroll right. (Thankfully most website owners don’t demand you make their pages so that you don’t have to scroll down anymore!)

Web pages designed to the popular 1024×768 resolution, will have blank areas of screen when viewed at larger screen sizes such as 1920×1080 so a good ecommerce web design will be designed to deal with this in a specific manner.

When designing at a fixed resolution you can deal with larger display settings by either aligning the site to the left and having a huge great big gap to the right, or you can centre align the website in the available space and then the extra screen resolution will be on either side of the content area.

However, the sensible, modern day approach is to make the site flexible to support all screen resolutions by creating ‘fluid’ content that will flow to fit the available page space irrespective of what size screen resolution it is viewed at.

Also, because of the increased popularity of the web the challenge for a website owner is how to engage your viewers and get them to stay on your website for as long as possible and show them as much content as possible. One way to help with this is to make full use of all of the available space. Two great big blank areas either side of a tiny web page is simply just a waste of space. Imagine if you picked up a newspaper or magazine and only half of the front page had got any content on it, the editor would get the sack for sure! So by creating fluid content, web site owners can take advantage of larger publishing spaces available on bigger screen users, whilst optimising content for display on smaller screens too.

Another advantage with big screen displays is the ability to use the new area for re-publishing. Re-publishing is a way to put content from another area of your website onto a different page, thereby bringing it forward for the viewer. An example of this that we did on one site we created was to insert an alphabetical list of names of the products available on the website below the left hand menu on pages that were very long.

All pages tend to be different lengths, as determined by the content on the page, so we used a clever widget to create this list of product names and load it in the gap until it ran out of space. This was great for SEO too as it gave a direct link to specific product pages based on their product names without having to crawl through category pages first, also website users would often see something in the list they wanted and click straight through to the page and buy the item.

Ultimately this has evolved into what would now be thought of as a web 2.0 ‘tag cloud’ a list of tags that are usually user generated, to indicate and link directly to a specific content group or item. Using a tag cloud is a great way to fill fluid spaces on larger screens that you can fill with what are effectively links to other parts of the website.

How do you create fluid content?

Fluid content is really easy to create, the majority will be words of course, which are naturally fluid so on a small resolution screen you might get 5-10 words to a row, on a larger screen you can get 20-30 words or more. However the challenge comes with images, and particularly website graphics. A photograph, whilst it can be made smaller and larger offline, it can’t be automatically resized by the web browser at the time of viewing (not taking into account the Zoom function in Internet Explorer).

The HTML code that makes up your web pages is again designed to allow fluidity by fitting content into the available page area, so some best practises that can be employed to make content fluid include not using tables in the code (which are depreciated these days now anyway), not setting specific screen width in pixels, use 100% instead. By fading images into blocks of colour in the website graphics, you can create a stretchable element that will scale to fit all window sizes. Use little boxes to put stuff in, these can then flow around the screen as required without having to be in any particular place, they also help to draw the eye to special offers, discounts, newsletter sign ups etc, and can of course be styled by your graphic designer with colours and shadows and gradients to look great.

Conclusion

Any of the many Loughborough web design companies will agree that a fluid scalable design is really the only option to consider these days, as it maximises the available publishing space on larger screens and with the rising popularity of smart phones and netbooks it ensures you site also works well on these smaller screens.
